Why Is One Sprinkler Zone Not Working?

If other zones run normally, start the problem zone manually and watch what every sprinkler head does.

What is the zone actually doing?

Run a zone that works, then start the problem zone. Watch every head for a minute. What the heads do together tells you more than the first damaged part you notice.

No heads rise

The whole zone is missing either the command to open or the water that should follow it. Start with a manual run at the controller.

Every head is weak

This points to a shared flow problem, such as escaping water, a restricted valve, low supply, or the zone trying to use more water than is available.

Only one or two heads fail

Inspect those heads for blockage, visible damage, or water at the base. The rest of the zone working normally is an important clue.

The zone will not stop

Turn it off at the controller. If water keeps flowing, use an irrigation shutoff only when you can identify it with certainty, then schedule service.

Does the controller start the zone?

Use the controller’s manual start and select the problem zone. Check that it has a runtime and note any error, sensor message, or pause shown on the display.

If a manual run works normally, the issue may be in the schedule. If the controller says the zone is running but no heads rise, the signal or water stops somewhere farther along the path.

Before service, take one photo

Capture the controller model, station number, and any message on the display. Note whether the problem began after digging, a power interruption, or controller work.

Do not open the controller, disconnect wires, or take apart the valve unless you understand that equipment and its shutoff procedure.

Why is the whole sprinkler zone weak?

When every head is weak, the cause usually affects the zone before water reaches the individual heads. Replacing the first nozzle you see may change the symptom without fixing it.

Look for escaping water

Watch for bubbling, soft ground, or an unusually wet strip between the valve area and the sprinkler heads.

Compare all the heads

Note whether every head rises partway or whether the spray gets weaker toward one end of the zone.

Leave the nozzles alone for now

A different nozzle can hide a supply problem or increase the amount of water the weak zone is trying to use.

When should you schedule sprinkler-zone repair?

Get the zone checked when the quick observations do not lead to a clear, visible correction. These symptoms do not automatically mean the sprinkler system needs replacement.

A manual start does nothing

No heads rise even though the controller shows the station running.

The controller shows an error

The station reports a fault, or the problem began after electrical or landscape work.

The entire zone is weak or wet

Several heads stay low, or water surfaces before reaching them.

The zone is intermittent or stuck on

It starts unpredictably, shuts down during a run, or continues after the cycle ends.
